GRANT WOOD – BIOGRAPHY
I was born in the prefab section of the government hospital in the sleepy town of Port Shepstone in the August of 1952,
My father took one look at me and said to my mother – ‘Let’s call it quits’
After much mumbling and grumbling they settled on Grant Noel, Noel being my father’s name and so life began! Smile!
I grew up inland of Hibberdene where we farmed sugar cane and ran a trading store in an area known as location number 5 in those blurry days of the old South Africa.
I attended the Port Shepstone regime of infant and junior schools for my earlier education and left for Durban and boarding school in 1966 to attend DHS where I matriculated in 1969.
After completing my Naval training in Saldana Bay in 1971, I attended Natal University for 6 years and graduated with a building degree after completing 2 years of architecture as a form of introductory warm up to something more attainable.
Since graduating, I have been connected to the construction industry and have run my own businesses for most of my life.
Art has been a passion since my early days and has always formed part of a sublime creative outlet when the madness of Johannesburg got to be too much.
I have had numerous exhibitions and was involved with Art in the Park at Zoo Lake for many years.
I have always had a love for and fascination with art – particularly watercolours and was motivated by the old, reel flicks at DHS where Alan Turton, my art teacher used to feature Nils Anderson and other great watercolourists of the time.
Douglas Treasure and the late Richard Rennie were also artists that I admired.
With a view to loosening up my style a bit I really value the likes of Alvaro Castagnet, Joseph Zbugvic and Nita Engele.
I have been involved with The SA Artist for a number of years both as a featured artist and also as a contributor in the form of ‘The Grant Wood watercolour workshop’ series which has been running for about 6 issues.
I have had a number of successful exhibitions at various centres and now run three day art workshops in watercolours from our quaint little south coast village – Umzumbe – and in other centres by request.
I currently live in Umzumbe and am a keen mountain biker, cook and when the mood grabs, some fair weather surfing as well!
I am a member of various watercolour societies including a 2 year membership of the American Watercolor Society and enjoy competing from time to time on various art platforms.
