The layers on the walls that have been repeatedly renovated with the fresh feeling each time reflect the cycles of renewed hope that we as humans experience in the rooms of our minds, over the passage of time. The room has fallen into severe dereliction now, but of course sunlight and fresh air stream through the tattered hangings of our defences and, out of the seeming chaos, life is renewed.
The title is the modified first line of a poem by Carl Sandberg called Hope is a Tattered Flag.
