In the 1950’s many of the roads were still gravel on route to our grandparents’ farm. My dad had to cross two or three low-level bridges that were sometimes in flood, and the roads were often slippery. My dad had to drive very slow and carefully, which meant we quite often arrived well after dark at the low-level bridges. This is a fond memory as it was both scary and exiting for my sister and I, as my dad had to stop and judge the strength of the river before crossing slowly with the water rushing against the car and even leaking into the car. There is a lesson in this for me in that life is sometimes unpredictable and scary and we feel out of control, however, we have to trust that we are in capable hands and all will be well.
