This painting captures a quiet and deeply personal moment in our home, in a sunlit space affectionately known as “Frida’s Corner,” named in honour of the iconic artist Frida Kahlo. It is the favourite winter sanctuary of Maya, our beloved 15-year-old feline matriarch and the undisputed dame of the house.
I was inspired by the beauty of an ordinary, yet profound moment: Maya basking peacefully in the warmth of the winter sun as light streamed through the window. The scene was rich with contrasts — light and shadow, warmth and cold, brightness and stillness — creating a sense of serenity and contemplation that I felt compelled to capture.
Beyond portraying a cherished companion, this work explores the comfort of home, the passage of time, and the quiet dignity that accompanies age. The interplay of sunlight and darkness became a metaphor for life’s gentle dualities, while Maya’s peaceful presence embodies resilience, grace, and the simple joy of finding warmth and light amidst the winter cold.
