Sea anemones were the first ocean organisms that mystified me. When I first saw them in the tide pools, I was certain they were poisonous—nothing that brightly colored could be harmless. While they are toxic to small fish, I was relieved to discover that the ones I encountered were safe to touch. I gently stroked them and imagined how wonderful it would be to curl up inside one.
